“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy ice-cream and that’s kind of the same thing, isn’t it?”

There once was a time when no really supreme ice-cream was produced in Johannesburg… then came Paul’s.  Thank goodness!

Paul Ballen started experimenting with ice-cream flavours in his parents’ kitchen as a kid after receiving an ice-cream machine as a birthday present. He started giving tubs away to family and friends. Everyone loved it and Paul became known as “the ice-cream guy” and in 2014 Paul and one of his varsity friends turned his hobby into a business.

Every flavour is made with fresh milk, full cream, eggs, sugar and other fine quality ingredients and contains zero synthetic additives or chemicals. The secret lies in the ‘hands-on’ approach and individual attention given to each batch of ice-cream.

Standard flavours include Peppermint Crisp Tart, Nutella & Oreo (one of the first flavours Paul mixed as a youngster), Madagascan Vanilla, Birthday Cake (my personal favorite!), Roasted Banana, Cookies & Cream and Dulce de Leche.

Special flavours include Chili chocolate, Butterscotch & Brownie, Chamomile Honey, Vietnamese Coffee & Oreo, Cereal Milk (for real!), Cinnamon Toast, Green Tea & White Chocolate, Butter Popcorn, Butter Cake, Halva, Key Lime Pie (very American), Milk Tart, Pumpkin Spice Latté, Hot Cross Bun, Chai Tea, White Rabbit (OMW can’t deal!), S’mores, Roasted Coconut, Red Velvet, Lemon & Basil, Cardamom & Pistachio, Maple Syrup with candied Pecan AND Whiskey, Ginger, Liquorice, and Speculaas Cookie Butter (For Nicole) to name a few!

They also offer healthy choices, sorbet, kosher and ice-cream cakes can be ordered. <Someone better get me one for my next birthday…>

They also do a  new “flavour of the month” every month and November’s is MOVEMBER MANGO.

My friend Lana and I stopped by for a cone last week at their Parkhurst store after a long, exhausting day of shooting people…

With my camera that is!

The interior is simple and modern, but fun at the same time – exactly how an ice cream shop should be.

They let me taste 6 flavours before I could make up my mind…it’s just so hard to pick just one 😉

Birthday cake – my kinda flavour. It tasted EXACTLY like that classic kiddie birthday party cake with sprinkles on!

The beautiful Lana, my ice cream model for the day.

We don’t ever want to be just an ice-cream store in the corner of a mall”

So head over to your nearest Paul’s and get it while it’s hot (cold)!!!
