WHAT I MISS ABOUT KOREA

The other day I was talking with some friends about (mostly) food and someone asked me which foods I miss most from my time working in South Korea. That got me thinking about all the other things I miss about the place I called home for 2 years. So, I decided to jot them all down and put together a fun little post about all the small things I miss about living in Korea. Hope you guys enjoy it! Here…

FIVE THINGS FRIDAY | MIDLANDS EDITION

Last weekend I spent a lovely three days in the Natal Midlands to attend a friend's wedding at the beautiful Haycroft Farm - once more congrats, Corli & Ivan! The Midlands Meander is a magical place. Home to lush green hills and farmlands, misty mountains, enchanted forests and old English country hospitality. I felt completely transported to another country. Somewhere in between Ireland, Scotland and Britain. Once you visit this treasure of a place I promise you will be back…

PAUL’S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM

"You can't buy happiness, but you can buy ice-cream and that's kind of the same thing, isn't it?" There once was a time when no really supreme ice-cream was produced in Johannesburg... then came Paul's.  Thank goodness! Paul Ballen started experimenting with ice-cream flavours in his parents' kitchen as a kid after receiving an ice-cream machine as a birthday present. He started giving tubs away to family and friends. Everyone loved it and Paul became known as "the ice-cream guy"…

FIVE THINGS FRIDAY

1. PAUL'S HOMEMADE ICE-CREAM There once was a time when no really supreme ice-cream was produced in Johannesburg... then came Paul's. Thank goodness for us! Their flavours include Nutella & Oreo, Birthday Cake (my personal favourite!), Cookie Dough, Chili Chocolate, Butterscotch & Brownie, S'mores, Butter Popcorn, Hot Cross Bun, Cardamom & Pistachio, Maple Syrup with candied Pecan AND Whiskey, Chai Tea, Liquorice, and Speculaas Cookie Butter (also a fave of mine) to name a few! They also do a  new "flavour of…

JOBURG EATERIES | PRON

If you know me, you'll most definitely know that PRON is one of my top 3 favourite Joburg restaurants. When I think of Chinese food, I think of spring rolls, dumplings, sweet & sour chicken or chop suey. I thought I knew it all and that this place would be more of the same, but with better decor than your average Chinese take-away. To my surprise, I learned that this is not the case at PRON. They introduced me…

FIVE THINGS FRIDAY

Hi guys, Hope you enjoyed last week's post. Quick update : I still haven't had the chance to make the Avocado ice-cream (but stay tuned), I tried out my own Halloween make-up look (preferred the bloody vampire Insta-filter on myself though), still failed to watch a horror movie this week as planned (I'm just too much of a scaredy pants), went glamping, visited a health shop AND actually bought stuff from there for once , and discovered some very important new talent. Keep scrolling.…

FIVE THINGS FRIDAY

Heeeeey everyone! Yes, I know I haven't been very communicative these last few months. And yes I hate to be that person, but I was REALLY BUSY.... <cringe> Work, social things and re-building my life took priority this year so LE BLOG had to be put on the back burner for a little while. Side note : "BUSY IS NOT A BADGE OF HONOR". I'm back now however. Back online AND back in my home country South Africa for those…

HELLO KITTY CAFÉ

People who know me might ask: How the heck did I end up in a Hello Kitty Café? Trust me, I’m no Hello Kitty fan! I lived almost a full 2 years in Korea without any intention of going, but in my last few weeks I finally folded. Not that I need to justify myself to anyone, but my reasons are: I was in need of coffee. #goodenough I had that "first day of summer vacation!" feeling. When in Korea...…

BIRTHDAY ANXIETY | 20 LESSONS SINCE TURNING THE BIG 25

I've been having some mixed feelings about my birthday. I'm at the age where turning a year older isn't quite as exciting as it used to be. It also doesn't help my anxiety that in Korea, I am turning 26. Koreans celebrate their first year at birth, so according to my co-teachers and students, I am 26. Yikes. There's nothing like skipping a year to make a girl feel old. Am I doing this right? I do freak out…

THE PHILIPPINES | BORACAY

Boracay is a very tiny island in the Visayas region of the central Philippines and I had to do quite a bit of zooming before I found it on Maps. Even though the name Boracay doesn't ring a bell with most South Africans, it’s far from undiscovered — the island absolutely teems with tourists, especially Filipinos, Koreans, and Chinese. Usually when places are so highly regarded, they can be a letdown in person. When you don’t have the perfect lighting or Photoshop…
